Lyris Upgrades MailShield
Server Email Filtering Solution with Per-User Controls
and Enhanced Spam Protection
BERKELEY, CA - October 13, 2004 - Lyris Technologies
today announced the release of Version 4.0 of MailShield
Server, its award-winning enterprise-level email filtering
application. The upgrade adds a SQL database for recording
inbound and outbound messages, end-user anti-spam controls
and per-recipient address handling for greater flexibility,
integration of Mailshell Inc.'s widely used anti-spam
engine for enhanced detection of unwanted messages,
and a new two-tiered feature set with separate pricing
for basic and advanced installations.
MailShield Server 4.0 Standard is a server-based solution
that blocks unsolicited email via a two built-in spam
detection engines, the highly regarded open-source SpamAssassin
and the newly added Mailshell Spam Recognition System
(MSRS). It also prevents spammers from relaying their
mail through a protected organization's servers.
MailShield Server 4.0 Pro includes all of the features
in the Standard package, plus new management capabilities
for both administrators and end users, including:
Recording of all
SMTP transactions utilizing a SQL database,
to create a complete audit trail of every SMTP session
and email message to expedite troubleshooting.
Per-recipient address
handling to protect valid recipient addresses
and to automatically reject mail sent to invalid addresses,
such as those that spammers make up for "dictionary
attacks." Administrators can also designate certain
recipient addresses as "spamtraps" to train MailShield's
Bayesian analyzer.
User-defined spam
settings enabling end users to customize their
own spam thresholds using a quantitative "spam score."
Users can also configure MailShield Server to flag
spam with a subject line prefix, allow flagged mail
to pass through to their inboxes, or quarantine flagged
mail within the MailShield interface.
User-defined white
and black lists, complementing the server-level
list of "good" and "bad" senders, domains, and IP
addresses. This ensures that mail from designated
senders is always, or never, allowed through to users'
inboxes.
All end user controls are configured through a
password-protected Web interface, allowing end users
to manage their own spam filter without administrative
assistance.
"MailShield 4.0 addresses the serious challenge
that businesses face when protecting many end users
with different tolerances for or definitions of
spam," said Steven Brown, vice president of marketing
at Lyris. "Version 4.0's per-recipient mail handling
and end-user filter controls let them block clearly
unacceptable mail at the organizational level, while
allowing individuals to set their own threshold
for mail that might be spam."
More than 300 businesses currently rely on MailShield
Server to protect their organizations from unsolicited
commercial email and unauthorized relay.
Pricing and Availability
MailShield Server licenses begin at $2,000 for the
Standard feature set and $2,500 for the Pro feature
set. The application runs on Windows and Solaris
SPARC; coexists with all major mail servers; and
is compatible with many popular anti-virus applications.
